Decision to Close the Media Library

The administration has decided to close the Media Library permanently in the next few months, due to financial uncertainties and departmental budget reductions. Media Library staff are being laid off, and hours will most likely change and be drastically reduced after September 18. If this is a concern to you, please contact your class representative or a member of the administration.

On a PC: Right click on filename
Choose Show in Windows Explorer
Right Click on File

New book on Postmortem added to collection!

Want to know more about autopsies and forensic science??? Dr. Crystal donated a copy of "Postmortem: Establishing the Cause of Death" by Koehler and Wecht which we added to our non-fiction leisure reading collection. It covers autopsy protocols, examinations, forensic toxicology and famous cases. This book can be borrowed for an extended period beyond the regular borrowing time limit and can be found in one of the display racks.

New Title Added to Leisure Reading Collection

We have added a new title to our display racks! "Intern: A Doctor's Initiation" by Sandeep Jauhar is an account of his medical training at a New York City hospital and includes stories about encounters with patients and administrators. I think medical students would find it an insightful and interesting read. This book can be borrowed for a longer time period. Dr. Jauhar is currently the director of the Heart Failure Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and occasionally contributes articles to the New York Times.

The semi-annual booksale will be held at the Piscataway Media Library (Kessler Teaching Labs/Second Floor/Room N-207)next week!! From Monday, August 10 through Sunday, August 16 we will be selling books that were removed from our collection or donated to us from graduates. The books will be on tables in the library and prices will be reasonable. Cash only please! NEW BOOK DROP!!!!!

Beginning on June 3rd, books borrowed overnight should be returned to our new book drop, which is located to the left of the library entrance door. Please push books through the silver slot in the door, and they will go through a chute into a book truck inside the library. Library staff will no longer need to go into the hallway to unlock the book return, and students will no longer need to be sure books are pushed back behind the inner shelf. Our old orange book drop was removed today. Please let us know if you experience any problems with the new system. We will be adding a "BOOK RETURN" sign above the slot soon.

Summer Schedule

The Media Library is now following a summer schedule. We are open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday. We are NOT open on weekends or in the evenings. We will resume our regular schedule on Sunday, August 9 when we will be open from 1 PM to 9 PM.

Borrowing Materials for Step 1 Board Exam

The Media Library allows second year RWJ students who are studying for the Step 1 Exam to borrow books in our Board Review collection for slightly longer periods of time. During May and June, students may borrow a book in the morning and return it on the following day by 12 noon. In order to review the entire 2 year curriculum in 6 weeks, they may need to borrow not only Step 1 resources but also texts and review books in all courses that they have taken. Library staff will try to be flexible and as accommodating as possible, while making sure there are enough resources available in the library for all second year students who might need them.
We regret that our materials can only be borrowed by UMDNJ/RWJ Medical students. Foreign medical graduates studying for Step exams should plan to purchase review books that they need or contact other libraries.

Library Donates Books

The Media Library recently donated used medical texts to a hospital and a nursing school in Guyana, as well as to Better World Books through Rutgers University Libraries. BWB provides free shipping and packing materials and donates materials to overseas countries in need of printed resources.
We thank all of those students who have donated their used medical texts to the Media Library in the past, and invite anyone to drop off books they no longer want or need. We might add them to our collection, offer them at reasonable prices in our semi-annual booksales, or donate them to needy hospitals and medical schools overseas.

Media Library Summer Hours

Our Summer hours will begin after Friday, May 22 when we will close at 9 PM. We will not be open on weekends or in the evenings beginning on Saturday, May 23. From May 26 to August 7, we will be open from 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday. We will also be closed on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) and on Friday, July 3rd.
Our Fall schedule will start on Sunday, August 9 when we will be open from 1 to 9 PM. Lots of luck on final exams and on the board exam! Have a safe and enjoyable summer. All the best to the fourth year students who will soon graduate. We wish them well in their residencies and future medical careers!

Medical History Society of NJ Dinner Meeting

The dinner meeting is held in Princeton and will take place on Wednesday, May 20. Tickets for medical students and residents are $20.00. The evening speaker will present a talk on Yellow Fever, and there are a number of other short presentations on medical history. The dinner is a sit-down served meal and includes one cocktail. Sidman Learning Tool Helpful for NS Course

Renewal of borrowing privileges at Rutgers Libraries

which contains interesting stories from medical students, residents and doctors.

The first book can be found in the racks of popular medical non-fiction and can be borrowed for an extended time period. The anatomy atlas will be located on the Anatomy section shelves.

How to Speed Voice on Audio Lectures

Many of you have asked how to speed up the voice on audio lectures. Here is how to do it:

To speed up Quicktime lecture files, the file must be saved. Then play the file with the Quicktime player. Open Window that shows AV Controls. At bottom of window list is "Playback speed". This enables you to speed up a lecture.

Annual Meeting/Medical History Society of NJ

The Medical History Society of New Jersey will hold their annual Fall meeting on Wednesday, October 15 at the Nassau Club of Princeton (6 Mercer Street) beginning at 4 PM. Medical Spanish Resources

If you are taking the Medical Spanish elective you can now borrow McGraw-Hill's Spanish for Healthcare Professionals package which includes a textbook (Complete Medical Spanish), a test booklet and 3 75 minute audio CDs. You can use it in the library or take it home overnight.
In addition to the new resource, we have several other manuals/textbooks that were used in earlier Medical Spanish elective classes, a booklet/ audio cassette, and a Spanish/English dictionary.
These materials are on the open shelving area across from the check out desk.

My presentation in Wales this summer

In July I visited Cardiff, Wales to present
"Digital Audio Lectures: Securing the Library's Future" at the Health Libraries Group Conference sponsored by CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) The conference was held in the City Hall, an elegant Edwardian marble structure built in 1905 where chandeliers and paintings decorated the rooms!
It was a privilege to represent the medical school and our library, and I enjoyed meeting and talking with medical librarians from the UK and from other countries as well. They were perfect hosts and although I was there only a short time, I enjoyed visiting the famous castle, the Bay area and 100 acres of historically preserved buildings that recreated Welsh life in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
The highlight of the trip was a tour of the famous Millenium Stadium (Cardiff is a big sports town!) and a lovely dinner of roast lamb (apparently a Welsh specialty)
Although I paid for the entire trip myself and I was without my luggage for almost 2 days, it was a valuable opportunity to share my expertise with international colleagues and learn from them.

We have decided to create a permanent area for book sale items that will be available throughout the year in the Media Library. One of the carrels will have a number of books for you to purchase. We have chosen some items for fall semester courses that have not yet started and some other books we think you might find useful. All sale books have a price tag.
Just see a staff member if you are interested in purchasing a book.
Remember that we will have another book sale in January with more items for Spring courses!

How to Subscribe to RSS Channels

We are posting the first PCM lecture today, so if you want to listen to it again, or access any other lectures from the MyUMDNJ portal, here's how:

1. Go to http:/my.umdnj.edu and click on Content/Layout button at upper left
2. Choose a tab where you want channel to appear
3. Locate and click the "Add Channel" button
4. Choose "Select All" from drop down menu. Click "Go"
5. Choose RWJMS Media Library News and/or Audio Lecture Link
6. Click "Add Channel"
7. Click on back to (blank)Tab Link

You only need to do this ONCE! Channels will appear each time you log on. To receive links directly on your favorite websites, see RSS information after you subscribe.

Media Library Semi-annual Booksale!!

The Media Library book sale will begin on Monday, August 11 in Room N207 and continue through Sunday, August 17. Take a look on the tables in the library for reasonably priced texts and review books, atlases and medical related works. You may be able to find something to supplement your resources or even a textbook that is still relevant for the course. We only take cash and don't like to hold items too long if you need to go the ATM, so bring along some dollars and find a bargain or two!! Most books have been donated by graduating med students or pulled from our collection recently. Each book will have a price label at the top. After our sales we donate the leftover books to countries that are desperate for printed medical texts.

Non-fiction medical leisure reading

Did you know that the Media Library collection includes some popular non-fiction leisure reading books on medical topics (do med students have leisure time?!!)...here are some of the titles that you might want to read when you have a long break:

Revised Borrowing Policy!!

This summer, the library staff reviewed the borrowing policy and made it somewhat less restrictive, taking into consideration the constructive comments we received from the library survey we conducted in the fall of 2007. Here are some of the changes:

Items can be borrowed for 3 hours, and we will grant an extension once depending on availability and demand.
Books can be checked out 3 hours before closing for overnight use.
Holiday weekends: Books can be checked out after 6 pm on Friday.
3rd/4th years and grad students: Books can be borrowed for up to 7 days with one renewal.
